Extra patrols after earthquakes
Wellington District Police wish to reassure the community that whilst the earthquakes have continued, no significant damage has occurred overnight. Police and the Wellington City Council evacuated an area of Luke's Lane last night due to a serious risk from a damaged lift shaft which will be demolished today.
Wellington District Commander, Superintendent Sue Schwalger, says "It will be another anxious time for the community while we ride out this string of quakes. Police are providing extra patrols on the city streets tonight to ensure community safety".
"As with the previous series of earthquakes, Police anticipate a decrease in calls for service as most people have left the city. The extra patrols provide a greater visible Police presence so that the community can feel safe and assured that Police can respond to any emergency".
“Police have resources available throughout the Wellington District and we will continue to respond to emergency calls from the public across the District as normal.”
Investigation into accidental police shooting
Police are continuing their investigations today into the non-intentional shooting of a man in Hastings by police yesterday evening.
He is currently in a serious but stable condition in Wellington Hospital.
Police were called to a Karamu Rd house around 5.30pm yesterday after members of his family became concerned about his behaviour, including his possession of a firearm that he had previously presented at family members. Consequently, armed police were sent to deal with the incident.
Members of the Hawke's Bay Armed Offenders Squad arrived at the house and made a voice appeal for Mr Pere to come out. He walked out of the house as directed and lay face-down on the front lawn while police attached plastic restraints to his hands. He was fully compliant during the arrest. Police then cleared the house and found a firearm under a bed.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Investigations Glenn Dunbier said at that point police officers moved forward to lift Mr Pere to his feet, including an AOS member. It was at this time that the Bushmaster rifle carried by the AOS member accidentally discharged.
Mr Pere suffered a single gunshot wound to his upper right middle back region. He was immediately given First Aid by police staff at the scene and was taken to hospital by ambulance. Mr Pere was transferred to Wellington Hospital around 10pm last night.
An internal police investigation is underway headed by Detective Superintendent Paul Kench from Wellington. The investigating team will also include specialist interviewers from outside the Eastern District. The Independant Police Conduct Authority is also conducting their own investigation.
Mr Dunbier said none of Mr Pere's actions during the course of the arrest had contributed to the shooting. He had been compliant and was not resisting police.
Police had been with Mr Pere's family last night and had accompanied them to Wellington this morning to be with him. The family were understandably shocked but were coming to terms with what had taken place.
Police this morning were speaking with local residents and any other possible witnesses to the shooting. ESR staff are due at the scene later this morning.
Forensic tests would be carried out on the firearm to determine if there was any possible malfunction. The officer involved is currently on leave and will be interviewed in due course by investigating officers. All staff who were at the scene are also being interviewed.
"The officer involved is understandably extremely upset by what has happened and we have support mechanisms in place for him. He is more concerned about Mr Pere's condition," Mr Dunbier said.
Mr Dunbier said police were taking the incident extremely seriously.
"This is a terrible tragedy and we will be conducting a thorough and robust investigation into what took place and how the firearm came to be discharged in such a manner.
"At this point in time we cannot confirm why the firearm was discharged and whether it was human error or a firearm malfunction. That will be revealed during the course of the investigation. We have a lot of work to do over coming weeks to determine exactly what happened and how it happened," Mr Dunbier said.
Guilty plea in Auckland High Court
Mathew Shane Ellery pleaded guilty to the murder of six month old Serenity Jay Scott-Dinnington in the Auckland High Court yesterday.
Police wish to express their thanks to the Ngaruawahia community for all their support and encouragement during the investigation into Serenity's death. The townsfolk turned their outrage at the crime into practical support and help for the investigative team. This played a significant part in the successful resolution of the investigation.
The investigation itself was lengthy and challenging for the Police team and experts who assisted. Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Greene says the plea is a tribute to their dedication and resolve and that ultimately some justice has been achieved for baby Serenity.
Detective Senior Sergeant Greene said the case reinforced that the most important role for all parents and carers of children is to love, care for and protect their children.
Man in hospital after being accidentally shot by police
A 33-year-old Hastings man is currently in Hawke’s Bay Regional Hospital after he was shot when a police firearm was accidentally discharged this afternoon.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Investigations Glenn Dunbier said the man had been taken into custody by police and was lying on the ground when it appears a police firearm was accidentally discharged towards the man.
The man was taken immediately to hospital by ambulance.
Mr Dunbier said two investigations into the shooting were underway by police and the Independent Police Complaints Authority.
Police were speaking with the man’s family this evening.
“This is a very serious event that police will be looking into thoroughly. We will be interviewing everyone who was at the scene at the time of the incident as part of our investigations, our thoughts are with the man and his family at this time and we will be liaising closely with them,” Mr Dunbier said.
Hero officer's thoughts are with family of crash victim
The Tauranga officer who is being hailed a hero for saving the life of a crash victim earlier this week says his heart goes out to the family of Greg Woledge who died in the crash.
![]() |
Deane O'Connor |
He is, however very aware of the effect that events on Monday night have had on those involved, the Tauranga community, and in particular the family of Mr Woledge, and the friend who survived, so he has agreed to make some limited comment through the Police.
"It was one of the difficult things while we were in the water because he [the passenger] knew his friend was gone," said Deane. "It's very hard because you feel elated that someone has survived, but you also can't help feeling for the family who have lost someone, especially someone who is a young dad. I've got four kids and I'd be devastated. My heart goes out to his family."
Deane, who wouldn't call himself a strong swimmer, credits his own survival in part to the unnamed passenger. The pair talked the whole time they were in the water.
"It was just about keeping each other happy and keeping going. We just talked about all sorts; I can't remember what. My focus was just on keeping him calm. I knew I could last as long as my body would let me; I wasn't tired at all. He pretty much helped me get out in a sense. It's quite scary; you're really fighting that urge to panic and all my talking to him was actually helping to keep me calm."
Constable O'Connor has also been overwhelmed by the response to his actions. Numerous messages of support and best wishes have been sent to Dean via Tauranga Police Station and social media. "It's quite humbling. I don't like being in the limelight; I struggle with this kind of thing and if I could hide under a blanket I would."
One of the most common questions since Monday has been around Deane's thought process that night and what makes someone make the decision to put their life on the line.
He was first on the scene, arriving just a minute or two after the call went out on the radio. As he got out of the car, people were telling him that someone was in the water, going under and screaming for help. Dean immediately took his police safety vest off.
"I hadn't even made a decision at that point; hadn't thought about jumping in. For some reason I just took the vest off and threw it in the back of the car. I went to the bridge, someone had a torch on him and I saw him go under the water and then come back up again. I just started stripping down. I could hear someone saying 'someone has to do something'; and some people saying 'you can't go in, you won't make it' and I kind of just ignored that. It was a calculated risk – I assessed the situation pretty quickly. I don't think I ever thought I couldn't do; it's hard to explain. I've never felt fear like it. I was shaking and am not sure whether that was the cold or the anticipation of what I was about to do. It was only when I climbed over the rail that I actually started thinking 'what am I doing?' and then I saw him go under again and for that split second everything went calm and I just jumped."

Police hail efforts of security guards
Police are hailing the efforts of two security guards who came to the aid of a Police Officer who was assaulted while apprehending a suspect from a stolen car.
During the melee the officer received bites to his arms and legs which needed medical attention. Things would have become serious had it not been for the intervention of two security guards who came to the officer's assistance. Mr Newman said it was welcome relief to the senior NCO who at the time was fending off four assailants. It is selfless acts like this that make you realise that it is more than just Police fighting crime it’s a team effort and a partnership with the community that makes the difference.
The senior officer is recovering at home with moderate injuries and expecting to return to work sometime next week. A 15 year old male has been referred to the youth court on charges of aggravated wounding and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle. Three females aged between 19 and 21 will face charges of aggravated assault and unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle.

Traffic and pedestrians are unable to go past the Police station.
Police, St John and the Fire Service are at the scene.
Police negotiators are at the scene also.

Police reach diversity milestone
Constables entering New Zealand Police in the last year have been the most diverse ever.

The milestone shows the success of the current recruitment strategy, which aims to build a police service that reflects the country's increasingly diverse communities.
"Policing in diverse communities requires problem solving abilities, communication skills and empathy with different cultures. It's these qualities, as well as cultural competencies, that we're looking for in new recruits," says Alan Cassidy, General Manager of HR and Organisational Development.
The best young people have many career opportunities, he says. "It's heartening to know that despite a challenging recruitment environment, the next generation of police officers is on track to better match the make-up of the communities we serve."
At least 400 new people will be recruited in the coming year.
Further comment on Operation Carlton
NZ Police have received a number of requests for a copy of the Operation Carlton ("tea pot tapes") investigation file. An appropriately redacted copy of the file was provided to Mr Ambrose's legal team in June 2012 as part of the disclosure process.
Police confirm again that there are no references in the Police file to accessing Mr Peter's phone records, nor is there any consideration of an application to access his records.
Extracts from a Police internal memo from Detective Inspector Grantham in relation to Operation Carlton (dated 2 December 2011).
"This report relates to the investigation into the Unlawful Interception of Private Communications between the Prime Minister, the Right Honourable John KEY and the ACT member for Epsom, the Honourable John BANKS on 11th November 2011 and the subsequent disclosure of this intentionally recorded communication to The Herald on Sunday. The matter of the Honourable Winston Peters disclosing parts of the private communication also needs further investigation."
DIRECTION
Given Mr Ambrose was not charged with a criminal offence, there was no Police investigation of Mr Peters, or his role in obtaining the recordings.
Police seize imitation guns during gang raid
The Organised Financial Crime Agency (OFCANZ) has recovered four military style imitation firearms while searching the home of a member of the Hells Angels Nomad Outlaw Motorcycle Gang in Auckland.
Also seized during the search was clothing emblazoned with the Hells Angels New Zealand logo.
The OFCANZ Motorcycle Gang Unit executed the search warrant at the home of a Hells Angels member following an incident in June.
The firearms seized are being examined and further charges may follow.
Police would also like to talk to a 30-year-old professional kick boxer who until recently lived at the address.
Detective Senior Sergeant Lloyd Schmid said the seizure is thanks to a member of the community reporting intimidation in a public place by a gang member.
“Police would like reassure the community that Police will swiftly respond to any incidents involving intimidation by gang members, which should be reported promptly so we can take appropriate action,” Mr Schmid said.
“These complaints are treated seriously and will be investigated thoroughly.”
Campaign aimed at tackling sexual violence
Palmerston North Police in collaboration with Abuse and Rape Crisis Support Manawatu (ARCS) and local bars have launched a new campaign aimed at tackling sexual violence in the city.
"The campaign is directed at men and woman between the ages of 18 to 24, and the posters that have been designed for the campaign are aimed at getting people to make the right decisions when they are drinking," says Detective Oram.
Two A4 posters, one aimed at females and the other at males are currently being put up in bars and clubs around the city. The female one features an intoxicated woman passed out on a couch with the title — 'Don’t wake up to a nightmare', and the male one has three situations with the main title — 'No consent = No Sex'.
"Bad judgements can lead to undesirable consequences and cause you serious harm. We want people to stop and think about what they are doing. It's about making better and smarter choices when drinking but still having a great time."
"Having the support of ARCS and local bars is invaluable and greatly enhances our goal to prevent and reduce sexual offending," says Detective Oram.
Ann Kent, Manager of ARCS Manawatu, says that the campaign is not about blaming the victim if they have been drinking.
"We simply want people to be aware that alcohol does play a role in sexual violence and there are ways to reduce the risk of it happening to them."
Jason Deane, Chairperson of the Palmerston North CBD Hospitality Charter says: "Any initiative that creates a safer environment for customers has our full support, and the Charter will ensure bar staff assist with increasing awareness around this campaign."
A recent alcohol harm related survey commissioned by the local Safety Advisory Board found that nearly half of those surveyed said they had a negative experience while in town on a Friday or Saturday night. The most common negative experience was doing something they later regretted.
"Police want everyone to have a good time out on the town but at the same time we want you to be safe. Good friends don't leave their mates behind. It's important to look after yourself but look out for their welfare too," says Detective Oram.
Anyone finding themselves in a situation where they feel threatened for their immediate safety, or a member of the public is aware of a sexually violent situation unfolding, they should ring police immediately.
There are also a wide range of support services available including ARCS Manawatu on (06) 356 5868. An alternative is calling Victim Support on 0800 VICTIM - (0800 842 846).
Hat trick for talented White Fern
Forty new constables will graduate from The Royal New Zealand Police College in Wing 278 on Thursday. Their wing patron is Kapiti Coast District Mayor Jenny Rowan. Inspector Sean McManus who oversees recruit training at The Royal New Zealand Police College has been very impressed with the team spirit and calibre of the wing.
Hat trick for Katie -
Constable Katie Perkins describes herself as a hard working, competitive individual that sets herself high standards. The Auckland-based cricketing star has taken out three of the top awards as part of her graduation from Police College.
“Being a leader amongst my peers and setting an example is something I enjoy and may be some of the personal traits that have drawn me to becoming a policewoman. I have a heart for serving others and helping those in need. Working for the Police gives me the opportunity to be on the frontline of my community, ready to respond as best as I can to those that need help,” says Katie.
“To play cricket for New Zealand was the dream I had since I was five years old. I achieved my dream at the start of 2012 when I played for the White Ferns against Australia. Cricket is my passion, and representing my country is the best feeling. To balance being the best cricketer I can be with the best police officer I can be is my challenge, but one I am ready for.”
Landslide no barrier to success
Also graduating is Constable Rhiannon Williams. Originally from the United Kingdom “Rhia” has taken out the top award in the wing. Rhia started her OE in 2007 and after 6 weeks of travel she landed in New Zealand and never left. Like Katie, Rhia is a keen sportswoman and once represented her county, Worcestershire, in netball.
Constable Williams is no stranger to living life on the edge and succeeding in the face of adversity. The home she rents fell victim to the Kingston land slip in June and she and her partner were evacuated just before dawn when nearly 50,000 cubic metres of soil destroyed the slope at the back of their house.

Pictured from left: Constable David Payne, Constable Shazmeen Khan, Constable Rhia Williams and Constable Katie Perkins |
“There is no way I could have achieved so well at College if it wasn’t for the out-pouring of support from my colleagues and police management following the slip. It made me realise I am part of the wider police family.”
Lifelong ambition realised
Constable Shazmeen Khan is one of eight women graduating on Thursday.
Shazmeen shares this special occasion with fellow members of the Muslim community in New Zealand as she is graduating during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
“I have wanted to be a police officer since I was seven. I love the feeling of helping people, knowing at the end of the day you have made a difference in someone’s life. I am so proud and I can’t wait to experience life as a member of New Zealand Police,” says Shazmeen.
Superintendent Wallace Haumaha, General Manager Maori Pacific and Ethnic Communities, is delighted at Shazmeen’s success.
'Shazmeen is a fitting example of the growing number of exceptional and talented young people that are joining our organisation to serve our communities. It is a proud day for Police as well as all the graduates loved ones."
Absolutely positively a Wellington winner
Wellington-based Constable David Payne has taken out two awards that recognise his outstanding leadership qualities, the Section Award and the Leadership Award.
The first recognises an individual who, in the collective view of the members of the section and the wing instructors, made the greatest contribution to the overall success of the team. The Leadership Award, supported by Porirua City Council, recognises an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and potential to succeed.
Born and bred in Cannons Creek, the former Tawa College prefect is looking forward to catching up with his old schoolmate, Porirua City Mayor Nick Leggett.
David credits his time on the rugby field as a pathway to his success. He played senior club rugby in Wellington for the Tawa Rugby Club and notched up nearly 100 premier games before securing a semi-professional contract in Edinburgh, Scotland. After a successful season there he spent the following two seasons playing in Oxford, and then secured a season in Edmonton, Canada, followed by two seasons in Vancouver.
“Rugby gave me a fantastic platform to travel with, gave me some amazing experiences and opportunities and introduced me to some life-long friends,” says David.
“I went to Wellington Central Police Station on work experience as a 13-year-old and since then a career with New Zealand Police had always been my ambition.
“I am a passionate believer in the one life we have to live so a job which makes a positive, proactive difference in society has always been the goal for me.
“At this stage I would really like to be involved in Youth Aid and community-based work, using ‘Prevention First’ strategies and helping to give people with limited opportunities the chance to seek a positive future for themselves, their family and the community in which they live.”

Sharp eyed Hamilton vehicle owner leads Police to Te Aroha home invaders
Waikato Police are crediting the sharp eyes of a vehicle owner who,
despite changed number plates, recognised his stolen utility and raised
the alarm- leading Police to uncover a range of offences.
"About 6pm a man went to a Te Aroha address where a domestic related argument developed.
"A side window of his car was smashed and he has driven off, returning a short time later with three male associates armed with a softball bat and a baton. The group has then smashed their way into the house."
Mr Raffan said a male at the address was assaulted by the group but the extent of the victim's injuries are unknown as he fled before Police arrived as he was wanted on existing warrants to arrest.
"Follow up enquiries at a home linked to the attackers resulted in the stolen utility the member of the public seen being recovered as well as a number of cannabis plants and several firearms that had been left unsecured.
"One of the attackers was himself injured in the incident and was taken to Waikato Hospital where he required stitches after suffering a serious cut to his arm while smashing a window."
Mr Raffan said while Police in Te Aroha were already following up the incident there, the timely relaying of information by the utility's owner enabled officers in Hamilton to quickly coordinate a District level response.
"Last night's incident highlights the value of timely, accurate information being relayed to Police which enables us to respond in an effective and efficient manner.
"In what initially appeared to be isolated incidents the relaying of the various pieces of information, when pieced together, enabled us to take steps to prevent further people becoming victims either from other assaults or from the risks of associated drug harm."
Victims use social media to help Police locate offenders
Hamilton Police are extolling the value of social media as a crime
fighting tool after victims of a burglary found their items for sale on
Facebook, leading to the arrest of three offenders.
District Shift Manager, Senior Sergeant Mike Underwood, said the
burglary took place at a Claudelands address on Saturday and amongst the
items taken were a 50" Panasonic plasma screen television, a Sony
stereo, jewellery and clothing.
"After reporting the burglary the victims made some enquiries of
their own on Facebook and identified some of their property and a
possible suspect.
"Members of one of our Public Safety Teams took the victims'
information and, marrying it up with enquiries of their own, identified
the offender and a location of where the property was likely to be.
"Under the same act our officers then went to a Tongariro St address where a 17-year-old male was found with other items taken in the burglary and a search of a Lorne St address resulted in the recovery of the plasma screen television and stereo."
Mr Underwood said a 28-year-old woman is being interviewed in relation to receiving these items.
"As a result of the victims relaying what they saw on the Facebook site to Police in a timely manner, investigators were able to not only arrest the three offenders but return a large portion of the items taken."
Mr Underwood said offenders need to be aware that social media sites are a valuable tool frequently used by Police.
"And while we can use these sites after the event to help investigate the crimes there are some internet initiatives that can deter crime from happening in the first place.
"We strongly recommend property owners record the serial number of their valuables on the Operation SNAP website (www.snap.org.nz) so we can readily identify items that are stolen. At the same time we ask you to report if you are offered goods at prices too good to be true. If you're not comfortable talking to Police you can still leave information anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555111."
See something do something urge Hamilton Police after burglaries
Hamilton Police are urging people to take stock of their surroundings and if they see something suspicious- contact Police.
"We had the burglary of a Claudelands home on Saturday while the occupants were out at the rugby. Fortunately for all concerned bar the thieves, the owners recognised some of their property on Facebook and Police apprehended three people yesterday.
"While those enquiries were going on other officers arrested a 17-year-old female and two boys aged 14 and 16 in relation to burglaries on Wymer Tce around 1.50pm."
Of concern for Police however was that a number of people would have seen these school aged teenagers on the street but not noticed anything untoward enough to warrant calling 111.
"An example of this is a dog handler who located the trio by a park and called for assistance. When responding staff arrived they asked a tradesman if he'd seen anything unusual and were told no, yet the dog handler and offenders were found 20 feet away over the fence.
"What we're asking people is that if they see groups of school aged teenagers hanging around when they should be at school then it's probably suspicious and to contact us. If they are carrying bags and don't appear to be involved in sports, that's suspicious too, and if you see them going into or running away then there is definitely an issue."
Mr Ross said by not doing anything people run the risk of their home being next.
"See something- do something and that's ring 111, if it's not an emergency and you don't feel like speaking to us directly you can still help protect your community by leaving information anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. "
Police pleased with results of gun safety campaign
As a campaign to educate firearms owners to be more vigilant around
security heads into its third week, Waikato Police say there has been
some real positives but also some disappointments.

Arms office Richard Plas with ammunition that was surrendered |
"Items have included rifles, shotguns, pistols, an inert hand grenade and ammunition.
"The people who have bought these items in have heard or read the media coverage at the heart of our campaign which is aimed at preventing unsecured firearms finding their way into criminal hands"
While that side of the ledger was going well, Mr Plas said other recent developments have Police seeing red.
"During recent searches of rural properties, Police found several A Category (A Cat) firearms together with high capacity magazines.
"In such situations firearms owners need to be aware that they are illegally converting their A Cat guns to E Cat Military Style Semi-Automatics (MSSA's), and as a result can find themselves in hot water."
Mr Plas said under the Arms Act 1983, the legal definition of a Sporting Firearm (A Category) is as follows:
• sporting configuration, in relation to a semi-automatic firearm, means being without any of the following features:
• (a) a folding or telescopic butt:
• (b) a magazine that is capable of holding, or that, by its appearance, indicates that it is capable of holding,—
• (i) in the case of a magazine designed to hold .22 inch rimfire cartridges, more than 15 cartridges; or
• (ii) in any other case, more than seven cartridges:
• (c) bayonet lugs:
• (d) a military pattern free-standing pistol grip:
• (e) a flash suppressor
"Case Law, (Police V Muench 1997), confirmed that if a person has an A cat gun to which a high capacity magazine can be fitted, and a high capacity magazine is found in their possession, then they are actually in possession of an MSSA, and as such can be charged for 'Illegal Possession'.
"Firearms owners are urged to avoid any confusion by ensuring their A Cat guns have none of the features listed above and that they have no such items in their possession which may fit their particular A category guns."
Returned Services Club staff assaulted during robbery
Two men purporting to be painters assaulted and robbed the sole male
staff member at the Grey Lynn Returned Services Club in Francis St, Grey
Lynn, at about 9 o'clock yesterday morning.
The two offenders, described as Caucasian wearing white painter's overalls, knocked on the front door of the club and were granted entry to it as the staff member assumed they were there to assist with renovations currently underway at the facility.
Police investigators have since recovered CCTV footage of the aggravated robbery [see attached pics] and are appealing for information from anyone who may have seen the two men walking in the Francis St/Mill Rd area yesterday morning.
Detective Sergeant Mike Williams of Avondale CIB says the brutal assault was a frightening experience for the club staff member.
"We need to know who these men are in order to keep our streets and communities safe so anyone who saw them or thinks they know who they are should contact Avondale CIB."
Anonymous callers can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police seek information on Hamilton pizza delivery assault
Hamilton Police are appealing for information from the public after a cowardly attack left a takeaways delivery man suffering serious facial injuries.
"It appears our 30-year-old victim, who works as a pizza deliverer, was lured to a vacant property on the street about 8.55pm.
"Arriving to find no-one around the victim heard a call towards the back of the property which went to check when he has been struck to the head with a metal bar or pole which has dropped him to the ground."
Mr Thornton said as the victm tried crawl away his attacker struck him with the metal object again before he managed to escape to his car and drive back to his workplace and raise the alarm.
"Police arrived and a guard was placed at the property overnight to allow us to conduct a scene examination today. As this is happening we're appealing for anyone with any information to come forward.
"Cowardly attack's such as last night's have no place in Hamilton which has forged for itself a reputation of being the family friendly, event capital of the country. It's therefore important that when incidents such as this occur those with information come forward and share it."
Anyone who saw anything suspicious in or around Montgomery Cres about the time of the attack or who has information on the identity of the attacker is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Shelley Begbie at the Hamilton Central Police Station on 07 858 6200.

Recording TV's serial number leads to Hamilton man's arrest
A clear example of Police and the community putting a prevention first model in action is how Hamilton officers are describing the arrest of one man who tried to pawn stolen goods to a second-hand dealer.
"On arrival our officers were able to determine the iPad had been stolen in a burglary of a Massey St home a short time earlier and as a result of this information we carried out a search of a Lindsey Cres home.
"While at this address Police became suspicious about a number of items including a television. Because the serial number of this television had been loaded on an information database were quickly able to determine it had been stolen and a 19-year-old man was arrested."
Mr Pratt said this man now faces three charges for burglary and two of receiving stolen goods and the quick resolution was a direct result of the serial number being recorded.
"With the victim's property details recorded officers can quickly identify the items don't belong to our offenders, it might surprise a number of people that without being able to determine such fact Police often have to return items we believe have been stolen to offenders.
"Recording the serial numbers and photographs of your valuables is free and easy, simply log on to www.snap.org.nz and follow the simple steps to protect your property."
Mr Pratt said Police also had a message for offenders who thought it was easy to offload stolen goods through reputable second-hand dealers.
"Our staff are in regular contact with companies such as Cash Converters who do a really good job at promoting our crime prevention initiatives and we would like to suggest to those who derive their income from the proceeds of crimes such as burglary that this avenue of income is drying up."
People are warned that if they are offered deals that appear too good to be true- they probably are and buyers face the risk of being charged with receiving stolen goods.
"Receivers create the market for burglars to thrive in, if you are offered goods you believe are stolen, contact Police, or, if you don't feel comfortable with that you can leave information anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555111."
Hamilton drug operation
Waikato Police investigating an illicit drug importation operation with the NZ Customs Service said a second man has been arrested and large amounts of drugs, gold and cash were amongst items seized.
LSD tabs |
"Members of an Auckland based Defence Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team were called in to render the item safe and the Morrinsville Rd property was able to be re-entered about 6pm."
Mr Keall said once the search of the rural property resumed officers located 3600 LSD tabs conservatively valued at around $144,000 and 100 Ecstasy tabs with an estimated value of $40 each.
"The EOD team also advised us another IED was located in the building while a sawn-off shotgun, four Military Style Semiautomatic (MSSA) rifles and loaded .22 and .204 calibre rifles were found as well.
"About $4000 in cash and $86,000 worth of gold and silver bullion was also recovered by the search teams at the same address and a second man from a third property searched by the combined teams was arrested during yesterday's operation."
Mr Keall said as a result of yesterday's searches a 25-year-old man faced 23 charges and a 27-year-old man faced eight charges in the Hamilton District Court today.
The charges include importing and possession of the Class A controlled drug LSD and the Class B controlled drug Ecstasy, possession of Cannabis seeds, importing precursors, possession of equipment, producing Cannabis Oil and unlawful possession of MSSA's, explosives and a pistol.
"Yesterday's success is testament to the value of an inter-agency, whole of Government approach to serious crime and highlights the risks associated to both the public and Police in relation to drug offenders increasingly being found in possession of high-powered weaponry and, in this case, explosives."
Government agencies combined effort following Waikato drug search
Waikato Police say a series of drug related searches in and around Hamilton today has highlighted the value of close working relationships between government agencies protecting New Zealand's border.
"At a commercial property on Hamilton's Kahikatea Dr, officers located some yet to be identified powder and laboratory equipment which will now be analysed by ESR and Police Clan Lab staff to assess and identify.
"Issues became a bit more complicated at a second address when searchers located a number of firearms and an improvised explosive device. As a result the search has been suspended and Police, Customs staff and the home occupants have withdrawn to await the arrival of a Defence Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team."
Mr Keall said because of the rural nature of the property there was no risk to neighbouring properties and their owners.
"As a result of our searches so far, a 25-year-old man has been arrested and will appear in the Hamilton District Court tomorrow on 18 charges related to the importation of LSD, Ecstasy and Cannabis seeds, possession of drug related equipment and the production of cannabis oil.
"Further arrests are likely and our search will resume once the suspicious device has been removed and declared safe by the Defence EOD experts."
Mr Keall said today's activities highlighted the value in the inter-operability and information sharing in practice with such agencies as Customs, Police and the Defence Force.
"Increasingly we are finding people involved in the illegal drugs trade are also in possession of firearms and, in this case, explosives.
"Offenders need to realise that not only are they likely to face a whole of Police response to offending of this nature, but as demonstrated today, a whole of Government approach."
Customs Drug Investigation Manager, Mark Day says today’s operation has been a success for the various Government agencies involved and highlights the effectiveness of this collaborative work.
“People involved in this kind of activity put our communities and our people at risk,” said Mr Day.
“Our joined approach has enabled Customs and Police to gain a complete picture of what we are dealing with and act accordingly to ensure no one is harmed.”

Police shut down Porirua drug dealing operation
Police from the Organised Financial Crime Agency of New Zealand (OFCANZ) together with multiple Wellington District Police teams seized $2.5 million worth of property, a shotgun and air rifles in a raid on a Porirua based drug ring this morning.
During the search seven separate cannabis growing operations were discovered at different properties. Over 100 mature cannabis plants were seized. Police also seized a substantial quantity of dried cannabis which was being prepared for sale.
The operation also recovered over 20 grams of methamphetamine and evidence indicating members of the group were importing and selling steroids. A shotgun and three air rifles were also recovered during the operation.
Detective Inspector Grant Wormald of OFCANZ said that the group had been operating in the area for some time.
“Search warrants were executed at ten separate properties including a Titahi Bay boat house," Mr Wormald said.
"Police believe a large part of the operation was co-ordinated from the boat house."
Mr Wormald said cannabis was also found growing at two properties which were rented by the group.
“It is concerning that cannabis is being grown in houses rented specifically for that purpose”, Mr Wormald said.
“Landlords need to actively manage their properties and not assume that everything is fine at the house just because the tenants pay the rent on time”.
In addition to the drugs which were seized this morning six properties with a total value of $2.5 million have been restrained under the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act 2009.
The investigation has included staff from the Wellington District Covert Operations Group, the Porirua Criminal Investigations Branch and the New Zealand Customs Service. They have worked with OFCANZ to gather evidence of the alleged offending.
“Investigations such as this take a long time and require many groups within law enforcement to work together," Mr Wormald said.
"Today's search warrants are the culmination of all that good work over a significant period of time.”
Following this mornings operation nine people will appear in the Wellington District Court later today charged with drug dealing offences.
Fleeing thief rams four cop cars
The drama started at about 12.40 in Greenlane East Rd when the owner of a property arrived home to find his house had just been burgled and the offender was driving off in his Toyota Hiace van.
The owner challenged the offender and tried to stop him but his attempts were unsuccessful. Minutes later Police located the stolen van heading south and Police Air Support Unit, Eagle, went overhead to observe and inform ground staff who were following but not in pursuit.
The offender continued to drive dangerously, underpassing on the inside of lanes and deliberately driving into oncoming traffic. He drove into the Pakuranga area and, during a Police attempt to spike the vehicle, the driver rammed two patrol cars. The spiked vehicle drove onto Ti Rakau drive before heading into a dead end street where the offender continued to drive at Police vehicles but was eventually stopped shortly after 2pm in Kentigern Close.
Inspector Shawn Rutene of the Northern Communications Centre says the offender was determined to drive dangerously despite efforts by Police to safely stop him.
"He showed absolutely no regard for the safety of other road users and our staff and we're all very grateful this escapade ended with only minor injuries to the vehicle's owner and one of our officers."
Woman dies in head on collision
A 23-year-old woman has died in a head-on collision which occurred at about 12.50pm this afternoon on State Highway 8 at Butcher's Dam, about 5km south of Alexandra in Central Otago.
The 22-year-old female passenger in the Toyota, who is also a foreign national living in Wanaka, was taken to Dunstan Hospital with moderate injuries. She was cut free from the vehicle by the Fire Service.
The driver of the Captiva, a 62-year-old Cromwell man, was also trapped in his vehicle and had to be cut free by the Fire Service. He was also transported to Dunstan Hospital with moderate injuries.
The road conditions were dry, the weather fine and visibility good at the time of the crash.
Preliminary inquiries suggest that speed and alcohol were not factors in causing the crash. The initial scene examination indicates that one of the vehicles has crossed into the path of the other vehicle.
Police inquiries are continuing and it is hoped that the names of those involved may be released later tonight.
