Two gay couples to wed at Rotorua Museum

The Edge has announced they will marry two couples, one gay and one lesbian, at the same time on Monday, August 19 when same-sex marriage becomes legal in New Zealand.

Richard Rawstorn (31) and Richard Andrew (27) from Christchurch and Jess Ives (31) and Rachel Briscoe (25) from the Bay of Islands will be married together on The Edge Breakfast show (6-10am) hosted by Jay-Jay Feeney, Mike Puru and Dom Harvey at the Rotorua Museum.

The Edge #SameSexWedding promotion received over 12,000 votes that saw Richard and Richard, and Jess and Rachel crowned the winning couples.

"Thank you to all our supporters and those strangers for voting us," says Richard Andrew.

"We couldn’t be happier and can’t wait to get married," adds Rachel.

Both couples are now in full planning mode for their nuptials. In true The Edge style though the road to the big day won’t be so straight! They now have to plan each others service and reception, from the nuptials, flowers, dresses, seating plan and cake - it’s all the other couple’s choice.

Jay-Jay Feeney of The Edge Breakfast show is excited to be marrying these two same sex couples at the same time.

"We’ve organised seven successful weddings in the past and have always been very supportive of the law change. We can’t wait to throw a double wedding for ‘little’ Richard, ‘big’ Richard, Jess and Rachel who get to be married the same way as everyone else, well kind of, minus having to organise each others day and saying ‘I do’ together!"

"The Rotorua Museum Te Whare Taonga O Te Arawa is very excited to be involved and participate in New Zealand’s first same sex weddings," says Stewart Brown, Director at Rotorua Museum.

"We are delighted and thrilled to team up with The Edge to provide a very unique setting for both couples on this historic event."

Hamilton gearing up to host 'super' final

Hamilton is gearing up for what is poised to be a spectacular weekend of Super Rugby this Saturday.

Extra police and event staff have been called in for Saturdays Super Rugby Grand final between the Chiefs and Brumbeys at Waikato Stadium.

Both teams head into the grand final after the Chiefs edged the Crusaders 20-19 there on Saturday night and the Brumbeys upset the Bulls in Pretoria with a 26-23 win.

Chiefs coach Dave Rennie says with the comfort of home ground we are pretty confident that it will be a chief victory on Saturday.

But lets not count our lucky stars just yet. He said.

Meanwhile rugby wont be the only thing playing at Waikato Stadium with a special performance by X Factor NZ judge and Australian Idol winner Stan Walker.

Stan spoke to Entertainment Editor Larni Hepi saying he is honoured to be playing at his own stomping ground with the 'beast' team in Aotearoa.

"Bit of a privilege to be asked to play there. I am a Chiefs boy from way back."

Walker will perform his two latest singles.

"its going to be awesome aye!"

"Hopefully it will be a Chiefs win,  but I am looking forward to Saturday night and I can't wait. Go the Chiefs!"

The Bop Live will be sideline on Saturday night with live coverage of the 2013 Super Rugby Final.

Famous mural on display in Whakatane

The Whakatāne Museum Research Centre has confirmed that it is storing the artwork ‘Urewera Mural’, by
noted New Zealand artist Colin McCahon.

A triptych, the painting was commissioned by the then-Urewera National Park Board in 1975 and was displayed at the park headquarters and Visitor Centre at Waikaremoana. Responsibility for the care and management of the painting transferred to the Department of Conservation in 1987. In 1997, The Urewera Mural was removed by activists. After its recovery and conservation, it went back on display at Waikaremoana before being placed on long-term loan with the Auckland Art Gallery.

Whakatāne District Council Museum and Arts Team Leader, Hamish Pettengell, says that at the request of Ngai Tūhoe and DoC, who wanted the artwork “moved closer to home”, the Urewera Mural has been relocated to the Whakatāne Museum Research Centre.

“As is standard practice, we contracted the services of a specialist conservator to condition report the artwork on arrival at the museum.  It is now re-housed in its crate and in a part of the building that is constantly monitored for any changes in temperature or humidity,” Mr Pettengell says.

The Museum will care for the Urewera Mural until such time as its future location is decided.

    X factor: Williams shock exit

A shock result on the X Factor last night.

Over's contestant Taye Williams mentored by judge Stan Walker  was sent home to the shock of many viewers after landing in the bottom two.

On Sunday night, Williams performed Kimbra's Settle Down.  After a public vote, he and L.O.V.E. were the bottom two acts.

After a fierce  song battle between the two,  the decision was down to the judges, with Daniel and Mel deciding Taye should exit and Stan and Ruby opposing and deciding to send L.O.V.E packing, with a tied decision  the competition  was sent into deadlock.

The decision of who was going home now was  in the hands of the New Zealand public and the contestant who had the fewest votes was going home, and that was Taye.

His mentor Stan Walker was disgusted with last night decision.  "People need to vote, Taye should not be going home and this is all just wrong."

Williams said this is not the end of 'Taye Williams' more like the stepping stones to something bigger and better. He said.

Last night's result leaves Tom Batchelor, Benny Tipene, Fletcher Mills, Whenua Patuwai, Cassie Henderson, Jackie Thomas, Anna Wilson, Maaka Fiso, Gap 5, L.O.V.E. and Moorhouse in the competition.

X Factor NZ: Homegrown this week

This week on the X factor NZ it is 'Homegrown Hits' the best of New Zealand Music.

The top 12  will perform a kiwi hit to fight for a place in the top 11 and  go through to week 3 of live shows.

Last weeks theme was 'Number 1's'  and saw   Eden Roberts along with Hamilton rapping duo L.O.V.E sent into the bottom two with  a decision by the judges to send  Eden home.

The top 12 will take to the stage on Sunday to fight for their place in week 3 of live shows and on Monday the decision of who will be sent through or who will be heading home will be made.

On Monday's Live result show will also feature  special guest performances by Smashproof and Annabel Fay.

However - The question remains. Who will be the winner of  X Factor 2013?

A chance for young blues musicians

Rotorua is once again hosting the Blues Festival over Queen's Birthday weekend. And there will be two opportunities for young students to gain blues guitar knowledge during the festival.

Sponsored by Rotorua District Council in celebration of NZ Music Month, these sessions will be free to music students in the Rotorua region.

On Friday 31 May, festival headliner Jimi Hocking from Melbourne,

Australia, will run a seminar for students on blues and rock guitar.

Jimi Hocking has mastered live guitar sound from years of experience touring and recording. Using both electric and acoustic guitars he has thrilled audiences and gained a reputation for his incredible live tone and technique. In this exclusive free seminar, students will learn tips and tricks from a true master.

Sunday 2 June, music teachers Jason Herbert from Auckland and local man Rob Powley will lead a hands-on blues guitar workshop for advanced students nominated by their tutors.

Both the seminar and workshop will be held at Novotel Rotorua Lakeside and are free of charge. Registration is essential.

Students should speak to their music tutor or school HOD for details, or email the Bay of Plenty Blues Club at info@bopblues.com or phone 027 273 8881.

For full details and festival programme visit www.bopblues.com/bluesfest

    Smokefreerockquest heats heads to Rotorua

Toi Toi Tree and Out of Tunar could be the hottest new sounds on the Kiwi music scene if they hit the big time via the time-honoured pathway of Smokefreerockquest.

Now in its 25th year, New Zealand’s only nationwide, live, all original youth music competition is about to kick off in Rotorua, with the heats scheduled for 3pm Saturday 18 May at Rotorua Convention Centre. Tickets $10, available at the venue.

Around 700 entries are expected to go through regional heats and finals in 23 towns from Invercargill to Whangarei. Founder and Director Glenn Common says while much has changed in the 25 years that SFRQ has been running, there are some things that remain the same:

"The enthusiasm of young people for their music, and the way they respond to having a platform to perform to their peers is one of the constants," he says. "These days they can put their video clips up on Youtube, but that hasn't taken the thrill out of getting up on stage in front of a real live crowd."

The Rotorua bands performing at the Convention Centre on Saturday are:

    Loft, Western Heights High School

    Burning Skies, Taupo-nui-a-Tia College

    Zenith, Rotorua Lakes High School

Toi Toi Tree, John Paul College, Rotorua Lakes HS

    Kingdom, Western Heights High School

ABN, Taupo-nui-a-Tia College, Rotorua Boys’ HS

    Undecided, Rotorua Lakes High School

Aftershock, Western Heights High School, John Paul Coll

    Puoro Kaupare, Tarawera High School

Out Of Tunar, Western Heights High School

    4ward, Western Heights High School

    Monique Doig, Taupo-nui-a-Tia College

    Bianca, John Paul College

Ruby Solly, Western Heights High School

Marcus Crowe, Lake Taupo Christian School

    Title, Rotorua Girls' High School

    Lucy Campbell, Taupo-nui-a-Tia College

    Azura, Reporoa College

    Liana, Tauhara College

    Sarah Chilvers, Taupo-nui-a-Tia College

    Ellie Redmond, Taupo-nui-a-Tia College

    Emily-Jane, Western Heights High School

This year there are separate categories for solo/duo acts and bands. The top two solo/duos will be announced at the heats. They will play off at the regional finals and will both go into the judging pool for the national final.

"We’ll have regional winners in the solo/duo section and the band section, and the same at the national final," Glenn explains. "There will be more winners and more prizes and it means neither category will feel overlooked."

Glenn says this change has been made in response to comments from entrants and teachers, and brings SFRQ more in line with NCEA assessments where bands are assessed separately.

The regional events run every weekend until 13 July, then the top regional bands and solo/duos submit videos for selection as national finalists. Smokefreerockquest, powered by Rockshop, has national winners’ prize packages for bands and the solo/duo winners, that include musical gear to a total value of $13,000 from NZ Rockshops and their suppliers, inclusion on the NZ On Air Kiwi Hit Disc, radio promotional support, and video play on youth music channel FOUR. There is also the MAINZ Scholarship for outstanding musicianship, the APRA Lyric Award, the Lowdown Best Song Award, the Smokefree Women’s Musicianship Award and the Skinny People’s Choice voted by text with the opportunity to open the SFRQ National final.

    Flavour sought for skatepark mural

Local mural artists are being asked to submit their ideas for a new mural at the Amohau Street skatepark.

Rotorua District Council (RDC) has allocated $1,500 for the commission, including all materials, and the theme must relate to Rotorua’s culture, heritage or environment.

Council community arts officer, Marc Spijkerbosch said the existing mural was painted many years ago by visiting American mural artist Eric Orr, so it has an obvious American influence.

"Now that it’s due for replacement we’re pushing for the new mural to have more of a local zing to it. We’ve got huge talent here so it’d be fantastic to get Rotorua’s culture integrated into the design, and to tell our story in such a high profile area."

Mr Spijkerbosch, who painted Amohau Street skatepark’s first mural of a hound dog on a skateboard almost 20 years ago, said the murals have been painted on plywood and typically last around five years before they require replacing.

"Due to weather and structural and tagging damage, as well as general wear and tear, our murals have had a limited lifespan. However the new mural will be created with aluminum panels so it will withstand the elements much better, and will therefore be enjoyed by locals and visitors for many more years to come."

Mr Spijkerbosch said the new mural will be painted on panels during a special mural workshop at Rotorua Arts Village studios, allowing local mural enthusiasts to be part of the project.

Submissions for the Amohau Street skatepark mural close with the council on 31 May at 5pm. The new mural’s unveiling on 6 July will coincide with the opening of Rotorua Museum's ‘Surface Treatment - the Art of James Turkington’ exhibition.

For further information or to submit a proposal contact Marc Spijkerbosch at Rotorua District Council on 07 351 8154, or by email to marc.spijkerbosch@rdc.govt.nz .

Rotorua Fire & Ice festival returns this winter

This winter's Fire & Ice Festival will return with a favourite from last year, and three new events.
Ice World has announced that they will return to Rotorua with their hugely popular ice rink as part of Rotorua’s winter festival.
Fire & Ice will also feature three new events - Mid-Winter Christmas at the Night Market, outdoor movie at the Village Green, and the Luminite lights trail at Government Gardens.
RDC major events coordinator and Fire & Ice coordinator, Kylie Lang, says she is thrilled to have the ice rink back this year.
“Having the ice rink return allows us to produce new events within Fire & Ice, and create an exciting festival in a usually quiet time of year.
“It also enables us to deliver a top quality event that can be experienced by locals and visitors."
Ms Lang said events such as Luminite have never been seen before in Rotorua.
"This particular event will have its own lights trail that weaves throughout Government Gardens and will incorporate local businesses such as the Rotorua Museum and Blue Baths. It will also feature a bigger and better fireworks and laser show to end the night."
Most of the events will take place during the final two weeks of July, in conjunction with school holidays.

Rotorua District Council supports careers expo

Rotorua District Council (RDC) is supporting Rotorua’s Careers Expo at Energy Events Centre over the next two days (9 - 10 May) by creating a showcase of career opportunities available within some of Rotorua’s largest employers.
Red Stagg Timber, Scion, Rotorua Lakes District Health Board (Dental unit) and Te Maioha will be joining RDC in promoting various positions, roles and departments, as well as any current vacancies. The business area will also be profiling the district’s key economic sectors of forestry, tourism, agriculture and geothermal.
RDC business marketing manager Renee Nathan said it is important that local young people understand what opportunities are available and the skills required.
"As young people enter the Energy Events Centre, participants will walk through the business area and have the chance to talk directly to staff prior to visiting the various education providers.
"We believe this will be a great way for people to gain a better understanding about an organisation and the diversity of options that can be explored. It will be the first time this approach has been done and we’re confident that it will be well received.
"The council will also run a perception survey for youth to complete during the expo. This survey will help us find out what young people are looking to find, what information they require, and how best to communicate to them."
During the expo, panel discussions of RDC staff from various departments will be talking about what they do, how they got their position, as well as answering questions from the floor.
"This will also be an excellent chance for attendees to engage and find out what exciting careers are available within council. As one of the top five largest employers in the district, it is vital that we are promoting to our young people to consider working for RDC," said Mrs Nathan.
"It is important that businesses play a role at careers expos and we’re encouraging youth, parents and anyone else interested to come along."

NZ Singlespeed champs a big success

Beautiful autumn weather, big spectator crowds and a hometown hero winning the tattoo - the 6th annual Pig & Whistle New Zealand Singlespeed Championships last month was another big success.
A sold-out field of 250 riders from all round New Zealand and Australia enjoyed a tough, challenging 11 kilometre course on Rotorua’s magnificent Whakarewarewa Forest trail network.
Some rode the full three laps while others managed one or two, then stopped in the beer short-cut tent to enjoy refreshments while watching the action unfold at the front of the field.
Most of the extravagantly costumed riders were there for fun, but it was more serious at the sharp end. The men’s field featured top cross-country racers like Mark ‘Cabin’ Leishman, Sam Shaw and Saul Webb.
It was the same story in the women’s field.
Beijing Olympian and Commonwealth Games silver medalist Rosara Joseph, top downhiller Jenna Makgill and endurance mountain biker Erin Greene were racing in the National Singlespeeds for the first time. Australian, Heather Logie, who won the 2010 Singlespeed Women’s Worlds Championships, also in Rotorua, was a last minute addition to the line-up.
2010 Singlespeed Men’s World Champion, Garth Weinberg, is a Rotorua legend but had a shocker of a start. While the racers assembled out of sight, volunteers and spectators scrambled the bikes. Weinberg spent a frustrating 5 minutes finding his bike, with most of the field already heading out of the double-S start loop and into the forest.
He didn’t throw in the towel, working his way past most of the other riders and into second place after the first lap. Weinberg also took the beer short cut option each lap. Instead of riding a longer loop in the race village, racers could scull a beer or eat a Weetabix.
“I felt pretty good after the first beer and got into a good pace,” said Weinberg.
By race end, Weinberg had added to his three previous national titles, in front of a noisy and enthusiastic local crowd and to an emotional greeting from his wife, Rachel and their children.
Meanwhile, Dunedin’s Erin Greene cleared out from her rivals in the women’s race. Rotorua was a happy hunting ground for Greene. The weekend before she won the solo category at the Nduro 24 hours, topping the women’s field and also riding more laps than the men. That was on a geared bike, but it was still a remarkable effort to back up a week later to win the singlespeed title.

    New Volunteering Guide launched

Rotorua District Council’s (RDC) Settlement Support and Citizen’s Advice Bureau have launched the updated Volunteering Guide to help newcomers settle into the community.
RDC Settlement Support coordinator Heather McAllister said the guide was initially produced in 2008 in response to the increasing number of queries they received from migrants about getting involved in the community.
"We’ve gradually been improving the Volunteering Guide each year, adding more information and photos of volunteering opportunities in our community, as well as tips to help people start volunteering. The new guide is now a more polished version than previous years and the information is easier to find."
Ms McAllister said that while volunteers give their time without getting paid, there are many benefits to volunteering.
"Volunteering gives newcomers the opportunity to meet new people and make local connections, learn new skills, gain useful experience that could be used in the workplace, give others the benefit of their experience, and to practice their English language skills."
The updated Volunteering Guide is available from Rotorua District Council, Rotorua District Library, and Citizens Advice Bureau. The online version can be viewed at rotoruanz.com/settlement under the ‘Get Involved in the Community’ section.

The Te Puke Fire Brigade is stepping up to a tough challenge this year by taking part in the Sky Tower Firefighters Stair Climb.
This annual event raises funds for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC), a national charity that supports patients and their families living with blood cancers but receives no government funding.
Last year around 480 fire men and women took part in the Sky Tower Firefighters Stair Climb which requires the fully kitted out firefighters to run up the 51 floors (1,103 steps) of the Sky Tower, with the race starting four floors below ground. This huge physical and fundraising effort raised an impressive $319,000 for LBC in 2012.
The Te Puke Volunteer Fire Brigade has around 30 volunteer firefighters and this year eight brave team members are competing in the stair climb. Mathew Cooke, a qualified firefighter from Te Puke Fire Brigade says he is looking forward to his second year competing. “The Sky Tower Firefighters Stair Climb is an opportunity to race against yourself up the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere.
“It’s a challenge that we’re looking forward to tackling and a charity that we are proud to be supporting.”
As part of the fundraising effort, the Te Puke Fire Brigade team visited Bayfair Shopping Centre on Saturday 23 March, to raise awareness for their cause. They were dressed in the same gear they will be wearing in the race, a full fire fighting kit including Breathing Apparatus (BA), weighing a total of 25 kilograms.
Bayfair marketing manager Louise Chapman says, “Seeing the Te Puke Fire Brigade in their full kit and knowing they are going to race up over 1,000 steps to the top of the Sky Tower is impressive. The team have clearly worked tirelessly in fundraising and training for this great cause.
Bayfair is pleased to be able to assist and we wish them the best of luck for the big stair climb.”
The Sky Tower Firefighters Stair Climb takes place on Saturday, 11 May 2013. To donate to the Te Puke Fire Brigade fundraising effort, visit here

Rotorua luget set for significant milestone

Twenty-eight years after opening with its world-first luge operation, Skyline Rotorua is about to hit a huge milestone - its 15 millionth luge ride. Based on electronic record-taking, the milestone is expected to fall sometime in April.
Skyline Rotorua General Manager, Bruce Thomasen, says the milestone is a "mind-blowing" development for the operation.
"Our luge operation was a world-first and it was the only commercial luge operation in New Zealand until Skyline Queenstown added a luge to its site in 1997," says Mr Thomasen.
"Now, more than 750,000 luge rides are hosted at the Rotorua site every year - with visitors usually riding more than once!"
Skyline Rotorua now has three luge tracks - with a combined length of near 5km including the scenic track and intermediate tracks which are both suitable for all ages, and a 1km advanced track which features tight bends and dips suitable for more experienced lugers aged 10 and over.
The Rotorua operation is part of Skyline Enterprises, which now also operates luge attractions in Canada and Singapore, with planning underway for a new site in Korea.
"Skyline has become an iconic Rotorua attraction and remains a must-do for both domestic and international visitors. Our 15 millionth luge ride is an important milestone not only for us, but for the wider Rotorua region as well," says Mr Thomasen.
"We hope locals and visitors alike will play a role in helping celebrate this significant event."
As part of the milestone celebrations, Skyline Rotorua is running two photographic competitions, with winning entries awarded annual Gondola passes and dinner vouchers.
The first competition will involve visitors giving their best pukana (a "haka face") while experiencing the luge, while the other invites visitors to post their own fun photos of Skyline Rotorua in general on the attraction's website page. The photos with the most public votes will win.
The lucky person who completes the 15 millionth ride will win a trip for two to Queenstown including return flights from Auckland to Queenstown, two nights' accommodation at Blue Peaks, a helicopter flight and dinner for two at the spectacular Skyline Queenstown restaurant.
The luge milestone is the latest in a series of "firsts" for the visitor attraction in the past 12 months, with the opening of its Jelly Bean Concept Store a year ago, the establishment of the Volcanic Hills winery and tasting room at the site, and the hosting of the inaugural Skyline Sprint Warrior downhill mountain bike race in February.
"We have continuously sought to improve what we offer in recent years, expanding not only our luge tracks, but also our other facilities," says Mr Thomasen.
"We've undertaken a significant investment and development programme over the past 18 months, including completely revamping our hilltop cafe, opening the Jelly Bean shop, revamping our carpark and creating new nature trails.
"We are committed to the local and national tourism industries and feel very positive about the recovery of our sector and the New Zealand economy. We will continue to find new ways to improve our offering to ensure that we provide visitors with the ultimate, fun, Rotorua experience," he says.
Entries for the photo competitions will close on Friday, May 5. More information about the competitions and other promotions to celebrate the luge milestone can be found on the Skyline Rotorua website (www.skyline.co.nz/rotorua/).

    Dirt bike series' popularity grows

The annual Dirt Guide motorcycle series is all set to go again with the 2013 series poised blast off at Ohakuri, halfway between Tokoroa and Taupo, this coming weekend.
It is a three-round series that offers something for everyone, according to organiser Sean Clarke, of Tokoroa, and, judging by the series’ popularity in the past, he must be talking the truth.
"The series is in its sixth year and has proved to be popular with a whole range of riders and families," said Clarke.
"The weekend starts on Saturday with the cross-country races. Starting at 9.30am is the racing for the junior riders, aged between seven and 15 years. We have two courses set up for the juniors, one track is a 3-kilometre course for the seven to 11-year-olds and the other course is about 10 kilometres long, which the 11 to 15-year-olds to race on.
"These two races run at the same time and last for 90 minutes."
The senior racers get their day underway at midday.
"The main senior race starts at 12 noon and this features a 20-kilometre loop in the forest and is suitable for anyone over the age of 15 ... as long as they have a reliable dirt bike and appropriate riding gear," said Clarke, a former International Six Days Enduro medal winner and multi-time former national enduro champion.
Activity continues the next day, too, with a trail ride planned for Sunday.
"This has a main course of about 35 kilometres and includes a short loop of about 10 kilometres. There is also a kids’ track near the base and that is about two kilometres long.
Supported also by Kiwi Rider magazine, the series has been a real hit with the country’s off-road bike riders, with competitor numbers growing with each outing.
In addition to attracting full fields, the talent runs deep with many current or former national champions - men such as Aucklanders Callan May and Chris Power, Te Awamutu’s Kevin Archer, Tauranga’s Reece Burgess, Palmerston North’s Adam Reeves and Hamilton’s Sam Brown - typically among those entered, although the course does cater for all ages and abilities and help is at hand for riders needing assistance.
"So, if you are looking for a bit of dirt biking this weekend, check out the Dirt Guide series."
The venue is signposted from State Highway 1, south of Tokoroa.
Round two is set for Tar Hill, just south of Tokoroa, on May 18, with the third and final round back at Ohakuri on June 15.
The series is sponsored by Michelin, Bey Ray, Axo, Renthal, Troy Lee Designs, DRC, Zeta, Kiwi Rider magazine, Sixsixone, TCX boots, Yoshimura and Suomy helmets.

    Taupo Sculpture Trust school initiative

The Taupo Sculpture Trust is breaking new ground with the launch this month of a school based competition
aimed at encouraging senior art students to try their hand at sculpture.
Taupo Nui-a-Tia College and Tongariro School in Turangi have signed up to the competition which involves senior students creating either a full set of sculpture drawings to scale or a small scale replica (marquette). The work done by each student will also count towards their NCEA qualifications.
Kaikoura sculptor Ben Foster - who created the two sculptures in Taupo’s Suncourt Plaza - will act as mentor to the students.
The entries will be judged by a panel of four. An overall winner will be selected from the winners and runners up from each school.
Trust chairman Claire Anderson says the project has attracted generous support - with Tuaropaki Trust coming on board as a major sponsor.
"Until now we have concentrated efforts on taking sculpture to the wider public by commissioning works for public areas," says Mrs Anderson.
"We see the new project as means of encouraging our young artists, exposing them to new concepts and promoting their work in the community."
The sculpture competition is being launched on Tuesday April 16 with motivational workshops for participating students at each of the schools. Ben Foster will be travelling to Taupo from Kaikoura for the launch.
The winners will be announced at a prize giving function at the Taupo museum on September 18. All of the designs submitted for the competition will be on display at the museum until September 27.
