Horse thief in hospital after being run over by car.

A Kawerau man is in Whakatane hospital today after he was run over by a car last night.

The man was believed to be apart of a group who were reported to be stealing horses from the near by Tui Glen horse ranch.

The accident happened just after 9pm  when a female driver was travelling towards Kawerau from SH34 toward's Valley road when her vehicle collided with the man.

Witnesses on the scene who did not want to be named said all they heard was the cars brakes screeching.

"We were watching TV and we looked out over the fence and just saw a car just stopped in the middle of the road and all we heard was a girl screaming. We ran out to see what was wrong and we just saw a young 'fala' lying on the road like he was dead."

A St John's  ambulance spokes person said one male was transported to Whakatane hospital with broken ribs and possible a broken arm due to the impact.

Kawerau police were unavailable to comment.
