New health clinic now open in Matatā
Radius Medical, local iwi Ngāti Rangitihi and others have collaborated to provide a new health service for the Matatā community.
The clinic will offer affordable and accessible health care in a region which has had no resident health service. Practice nurse clinics will also be held as needed. The first of these will be an immunisation clinic for babies and children on July 31.
The new service is the result of collaboration between a group of local organisations and Mairi Lauchland, General Manager of Radius Medical, Whakatane.
""We saw the need for some type of local health care in the Matatā community and I was put in touch with Te Mana o Ngāti Rangitihi Trust to discuss how we could do this. He had been looking for ways to enhance social services and support in Matatā and we were soon talking about ways we could work together to make a GP clinic a reality.
"Our organisations have worked closely together and I'm very grateful to the Trust for the way they have supported their community and us. We have appointed a medical receptionist from the community and she is training in preparation for the opening. We have also been generously supported by the Matatā Community Health Centre Committee, chaired by Dave Wallace. This has allowed us to keep the costs down for patients. From this beginning we hope to work closely with existing health services in Matatā and look forward to continuing this journey together with Te Mana o Ngāti Rangitihi."Patients will have enrolment status via Radius Medical, Whakatane, and can also visit the Whakatane clinic as needed."
