Gales and heavy rain on the way
A deep low to the west of the country is directing a strengthening northeast flow onto the North Island and the upper South Island.
Watches for heavy rain and severe gales are in force for many areas.
Heavy rain is expected to develop about the eastern ranges of Waikato, Bay of Plenty and western Nelson this evening, easing Monday afternoon. A southeast flow between the deep low and a ridge to the south of the country is expected to bring heavy rain to the far south of Fiordland from around midday today, easing late this evening.
Tomorrow rain is expected to become heavy in eastern Otago as the southeasterlies spread north. People in all these regions are advised to look out for rapidly rising rivers and streams, localised surface flooding and slips.
Southeasterlies are forecast to rise to severe gale in exposed parts of Fiordland Monday morning, with gusts of around 130 km/h, in exposed places, especially about the Fiords. Winds of this strength can damage trees and powerlines and make driving hazardous.
People in all these areas and in areas covered by Severe Weather Watches are advised to stay up to date with the latest forecasts.
