Whakatāne Aquatic Centre celebrations planned
On Saturday and Sunday, 14 and 15 July, entry to the pool and hydroslide will be free, with fun activities planned for people of all ages.
Saturday’s activity programme will run from 10.00am till 4.00pm, with highlights including water walker races, a dunk tank and pool inflatables. If getting wet doesn’t appeal, there will be plenty of activities that won’t require togs including a bouncy castle face painting and surprise celebrity events. Centre staff will also offer tours of the fitness centre and provide information on the fitness assessments and plans.
Sunday’s programme begins at 9.00am with an Aquacise session for over 50-year-olds. The hour-long Aqua-Splash class offers and all-over, low-impact workout targeting flexibility, coordination and toning, set to catchy, sing-along music. And from 2.00pm till 3.00pm, people of all ages can join in a high-energy, calorie-burning Aqua-Blast class focusing on strength, endurance and aerobic fitness. Both classes will be provided at no cost. Learn to Swim assessments will also be available between 10.00am and noon.
Numbers using the pool at any one time during the open weekend may need to be limited for safety reasons. If so, a waiting list approach will apply, with swimmers allowed in as others leave. Pool staff would also like to remind parents and caregivers that children younger than eight years old need to be supervised by an adult at all times.
Whakatāne District Council Manager Community Facilities, Paula Chapman, says the change in the Aquatic Centre’s management is a “significant turning point”.
“This is a great opportunity for our pool staff to show-case their facility and make sure the community knows what a great asset we have,” she says. “As for the future, we have some exciting plans under development to increase community involvement and support, but in the meantime, don’t just watch this space, come and enjoy it.
