Rain to start the week
A front is forecast to slowly cross the northeast of the North Island during Monday and Tuesday, while a weak associated low passes close to East Cape. Rain is expected about central and eastern parts of the North Island, with some heavy falls possible, especially about eastern Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and northern Hawkes Bay. There is low confidence of rainfall amounts reaching warning criteria in these areas during this time, as indicated on the chart.
Meanwhile, a cold southerly change spreads over the South Island overnight Sunday and early Monday, bringing rain or showers to eastern areas and some snow to the high country.
A ridge of high pressure then spreads onto the South Island later on Monday and early Tuesday.
Another front is expected to approach southern New Zealand late Tuesday and weaken as it crosses the South Island on Wednesday and the North Island on Thursday.
