Lakes News:

Stink day in Whakatane today

File Photo.
Reports to BOP Live from readers who live in and around Whakatane of  a sulphur smell lingering around town today.

Luisa Murphy who lives in Coastlands said the smell is like being in Rotorua.

"I went out to hang the washing on the clothesline and as I stepped out the door it smelt like  Rotorua" She says.

Paul major who lives in James Street tweeted us asking if we knew of the smelly smell and a haze  lingering around town today.

GeoNet duty volcanologist Michael Rosenberg  told The Bop Live it is a combination of fine weather and the wind direction.

"Gases from White Island are being blown ashore due to the wind direction and fine weather."

"There is nothing unusual about this and there is nothing to worry about and you should expect the smell and haze to linger around as long as the weather conditions remain as they are." He says.

White island remains at volcanic level 1 and  there has been no signs of  further activity since it erupted on the 5th of August.

Can you smell it? or do you have photos? let us know @baysnews or news@theboplive.net
