Thousands turned out along Whakatane's main street to enjoy the sun and a berry full on day in Whakatane.

Market  and food stalls lined the Strand  for the 5th annual popular Berry Festival on Saturday.

This years event also crowned the first Whakatane Berry Queen, Ashley Drayton who will enjoy a luxury food and wine cruse as her prize for taking out the berry throne.

The competition  was a twist on traditional pageants for a good cause - the aim was to raise as much money from donations to go towards a good cause in the community.

Organisers say this years event was the best ever held.

"The sunshine sure did shine on the 'sunshine capital' on Saturday for a berry full on day with a very big crowd coming along  through out the day." Whakatane Lions Club member and Berry Festival organiser Des Frost said.

"Stall holders and shops along the strand were also very happy with the festival too." He said.

"The Berry Queen competition was also very popular with the crowds and  a well deserved crowning to Ashley Drayton and not to forget the other  beautiful  young ladies who were also  vying for the throne."

Mr Frost said next years challenge is to make the festival  more better and bigger for 2014.
