Diversions will be in place to manage traffic while structural steelwork of Taupo Events Centre (TEC) is being painted over the next three months. The traffic management plan will be operational from today.
The access-way on the southern side (directly out the front) of the building that comes off AC Baths Avenue, will be closed for the first half of the project. This will mean those who want to go to the AC Baths or TEC will be redirected to the carpark because of the closure of a short section of the access-way. The project is scheduled to be finished in March.
The steelwork on the southern side of the building is being painted first to ensure it is completed before the Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironman New Zealand event in March. Work will be on-going on the northern side of the building when the event is on and cause very little disruption. The first stage of the project will see the establishment of contractors on site, including the erection of scaffolding and fencing.
The access-way closure is necessary to allow scaffolding to be erected, for health and safety and to minimise the risk of debris reaching vehicles and people. One row of carparks will also be closed. The building will be accessible from the entrance of the AC Baths and the side door at TEC.
TEC was last painted in 1998 and Taupo District Council agreed to have the centre painted as part of standard maintenance. The contract for painting TEC was awarded at the Tuesday 11 December 2012 Council meeting to contractors TBS Farnsworth. The repaint is provided for as part of the renewal budget for building maintenance and is necessary to prevent further rusting and deterioration.
