Huge scrub fire near Matata
Fire appliances from Whakatane, Edgecumbe and Matata responded to a large scrub fire last night near Matata.
A caller to The Bop Live said she could see it from her balcony and said it was 'Huge'.
Deputy chief fire officer Ronnie Munroe from Matata Voulinteer Fire Brigade said appliances from Edgecumbe including the support water tanker were called in to assist along with Rural fire from Whakatane.
"The blaze on the west side of the town covered a large area of scrub and was out of control on arrival and was so for some time but was later controlled and extinguished." He said.
An investigation into how the fire started is under way.
