New Rotorua beer a big hit with punters
Award-winning Rotorua beer company Two Fingers Beers is getting rave reviews for its first craft brew and has now added a second style to its portfolio.
Two Fingers alt bier, Alter Ego, has been available at the Crouchers Brew Bar in Rotorua, as well as several bars in Wellington and Hamilton since November, although it quickly sold out in Rotorua.
Owned and operated by Rotorua-based Englishman, Lawrence Oldershaw, Two Fingers Beers has just released a Summer Ale, the Dodgy Archer, following on from the interest in its alt bier.
The Dodgy Archer Summer Ale is described as having "delicate tropical fruits on the nose and palate, with a slight hit of citrus zest bitterness at the end". Beermaker Lawrence says it's perfect for the current run of hot, sunny weather.
"We've had a fantastic response to our first commercial brew and that has given us confidence as we push ahead," says Lawrence.
"People are really enjoying our beer and we're very excited about the prospects for our new summer ale."
Two Fingers Beers started as a home brew operation three years ago as part of Lawrence's quest for a more sustainable lifestyle. It quickly became more than a hobby and this year he produced his first commercial brew at the Mata brewery in Kawerau.
Two Fingers Beers are traditionally styled, blending the best of European flavours, with Kiwi notes. The inspiration for Two Fingers' flavours come from the beer houses of the United Kingdom and Europe and the Alt Bier is the first Alt of its kind to be commercially produced in New Zealand. The Alt is a popular beer from the Nord Rhine Westfalen region of Germany, a dark amber ale, with a malty flavour balanced with hop bitterness.
Lawrence says Two Fingers Beers are not available in bottles at this stage, but he expects they will be in the near future.
