Rotorua firefighters head to help out large fire

Additional fire fighters  are expected to arrive on Great Barrier Island today to assist fire fighters with the large bush fire that has been burning furiously since Wednesday morning.

Over 40 crews including three helicopters with monsoon buckets, diggers and other resources are being used to fight the large blaze that has raged across the Island.

A rural fire response team from Rotorua along with a team from Nelson are among the extra support called for  to provide relief support  to the many fire crews already on the island.

Bryan Cartelle, Principal Rural Fire Officer says he is pleased with progress made overnight.

"With the extra fresh support teams, they will immediately head out to relieve the already hard worked teams and work on fully containing  the fire and dousing hot spots that could possible reignite the fire".

"We still have a big job ahead of us, but we have the fire reasonably under control at this stage." He said.

The cause is being investigated and initial reports of the fire being suspicious could not be confirmed, said a Northern Fire Communications spokesman. It is unknown if the fire was caused by a 5000 square metre vegetation fire tackled on Sunday reigniting.
