Lakes News:

Taupo residents urged to conserve water

Water reserves in Taupo Town are dangerously low after heavy winds and the influx of visitors to the area have combined to badly deplete the town’s water supply.

Council is advising Taupo Town residents and holiday-makers to be water conscious and conserve water as Tamatea Reservoir is currently sitting well below capacity.

Council is asking everyone to refrain from unnecessarily using water and to use common sense. Simple things like avoiding leaving sprinklers on or not watering lawns will help.

If the water levels are not replenished soon, Council will have to put in place restrictions on water use. The current volume of water may not be sufficient to effectively cope with a fire, should firefighters need it.

The drop in the town’s water supply was initially caused by blockage to the intake from wind that battered the District earlier this week. The wind churned up the Lake and caused pumice and debris to block the water intake on Lake Terrace. Staff worked quickly to repeatedly unblock the intake though water flow remains reduced due to have usage volumes. The reservoir has been unable to fully recover due to continued high usage of water in the District.
