Lakes News:

Top fishing spots in the Bay

Bop Live  reporter Hayley Storey is a keen angler and in her spare time she likes to head down the coast and reel in that big one.

Hayley gives you an insight into the top fishing spots in the Bay without having to jump aboard a boat.

1. Thornton Beach Whakatane - You’ll find a popular spot for catching whitebait to one side of this harbour while the other side offers a convenient wharf to reel in a catch.

2. Kaituna Falls Scenic Reserve Maketu - Surf cast from the beach end or try the harbour where you can snap up a lot of herring and, if you’re lucky, you just might score a Kawhai!

3. Pukehina Beach Surf Casting - You’ll be surprised at what you can find at the beach from Snapper to crabs. Best of all, Pekehina is such a long beach that you have ample space to cast a line.

4. Bwentown Beach - This white sandy beach stretches for 8km from Bowentown to Waihi Beach. Either surf cast along the beach or fish inside Tauranga harbour beyond the Bowentown entrance.

5. Moturiki Island - Fish off the island’s rocks but be careful of high tides and waves that could through you off balance. Best to follow the locals in choosing a secure fishing spot on Moturiki.
