Kayaker rescued from harbour

A kayaker is back on dry land after being rescued by a local boatie when he got in to trouble on the Tauranga Harbour this afternoon.

Coastguard and Police were called to assist the man when his kayak became swamped with water on the Matua side of the harbour just after 12pm.

A spokesperson for Tauranga Coastguard said apart of the Coastguard water emergency plan is to notify all local vessels in the vicinity of the incident.

A local  vessel was near the man and a surfer who swum out to assist the man and was able to transport the man and the surfer  back to dry land on the Sulphur Point side of the harbour where paramedics were waiting.

The man was not injured and was relived to be back on dry land a St John Ambulance spokes person said.
