Man behind bars after relationship with teen
Carl James Butterworth was sentenced to three years nine months behind bars.
He's been found guilty of sexual connection with a person under the age of 16 between 2010 and 2011 in Te Teko.
Butterworth formed an intimate relationship with the girl when she was 13 by picking her up and taking her away for sex regularly.
He frequently threatened to commit suicide if she began relationships with anyone else.
In June 2011 he took the victim into the Matahina Forest and attempted to gas them both, however she managed to escape and call her father.
Justice Timothy Brewer told Butterworth he showed a lack of remorse, adding he blamed his victim for his own actions.
He says this is where the offending came out in the open, adding the victim is now unable to be at school, suffers panic attacks and has reoccurring nightmares.
Butterworth pleaded guilty to the charge, and one of aiding and abetting suicide, however this was withdrawn by the Crown before yesterday's sentencing.
