2013 Census a success
Mr Bascand finishes at Statistics New Zealand on 24 May when he will take up a position with the Reserve Bank as the new Deputy Governor and Head of Operations.
"As one of my last acts as Government Statistician I would like to thank everyone who took the time to fill in their census forms whether online or on paper.
"While the forms themselves took just a few minutes to complete, the benefits of having a successful census will last for years.
"I also want to thank the thousands of field staff who worked hard to get census forms to every household in New Zealand and collect those not completed online.
"Logistically census is one of the single largest government activities this year.
"The information collected by the census will now be processed and used to make important decisions for our country’s future.
"With the cancellation of the 2011 Census because of the Canterbury earthquakes, the 2013 Census is one of the most important we have ever held.
"In seven years New Zealand will have changed significantly since the last completed census in 2006.
"Government, local government and the public have told us they are hungry for the results.
"Information collected during the census will provide answers to important questions like: How have populations in Christchurch changed? What is the current ethnic make-up of New Zealand? Along with many other important questions."
