Third busy night for Fire Service

Torrential rain and flooding has kept the fire service busy for the third night in a row, The Fire Service got called out to 52 calls yesterday in the Bay of Plenty area.

One call last night was too a tree that had become unstable after a slip had hit it on Jonathon Street,
Brookfield.

Four houses had to be evacuated by police and the fire service after the tree looked unstable and at the risk of falling.

This is the third night in a row where fire service in The Bay of Plenty have been called out to flooding, on early Saturday morning calls started coming through of major flooding in parts of Tauranga and Mount Maunganui.

Calls started coming in around 3AM on Saturday morning at the end of the day the total number of calls were, 172 which started early Saturday morning quieting down around mid-day and starting up again around 4.30PM when a large amount of Torrential rain hit Tauranga again.

The worst hit was Waihi on Saturday night with The Top 10 Holiday park having to be evacuated due to rising flood waters.

MetService are forecasting further bursts of heavy rain and thunderstorms are possible today. In the 9 hours from 9AM to 6PM Monday, another 30-50mm of rain is likely in places, on top of what has already fallen. Peak rainfall rates of 15 to 25mm per hour are possible with thunderstorms.

Further bursts of heavy rain for parts of Bay of Plenty today, A complex area of low pressure is currently crossing New Zealand, Humid, unstable air associated with this system is bringing bursts of heavy rain and thunderstorms to parts of the North Island, Another 30 to 70mm of rain, on top of what has already fallen, is likely in The Bay of Plenty today, Conditions are expected to ease this evening.

People in these areas should be aware of rising rivers and streams, and the potential for surface flooding and possible slips.
