Large earthquake near Tonga



A large earthquake has struck of the coast of Tonga early this morning.

The US Geological Survey reported the 7.4 magnitude quake struck 285km southwest of Tonga's capital Nuku'alofa at 5.19am, and at a depth of 170km.

Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that there was no "destructive Pacific-wide tsunami" expected in the Pacific Ocean.

Reports state that the quake shook homes and rattled windows in the capital Nuku'alofa but there was no damage.

GeoNet reported multiple earthquakes in the North Island but has since removed them saying "Apologies large Fiji EQ caused two false events on our system these have been deleted"
