Turangi gets giant bike sculpture
The bike is an initiative by Bike Taupo and will be similar in concept to the giant bike at the top of Control Gates hill in Taupo.
The idea for a giant bike sculpture for Turangi was raised at the same time as the Taupo bike. Council has agreed to contribute $12,000 from its public art budget toward the cost of the bike’s creation.
The giant bike sculpture in Taupo has been hugely popular, with visitors and locals alike stopping to take photos and commenting on the artwork. Its purpose is to increase the awareness of Taupo District’s cycling culture and to alert motorists to cyclists. It is estimated Taupo District has about 100,000 cycling visitors annually.
The location of the giant bike in Turangi is yet to be confirmed. The bike is set to be created by local artist Marcel Zwezerijnen, who created the Taupo bike.
