Waikato builder scoops House of the Year awards

Master builders from the Coromandel to Morrinsville are celebrating the results of the Waikato House of the
Year.

Hamilton companies and houses collected the two top gongs in the Waikato Region Registered Master Builders 2013 House of the Year awards ceremony held at Claudelands Events Centre last night, but homes in towns including Whangamata and Matamata also snapped up awards.

Stewart Hanna earned the Supreme Award for House of the Year with a Hamilton home, while the award for Renovation of the Year went to Glenn Diffey Builders.

Judges said Stewart Hanna's entry was a fantastic example of the client, builder and architect working together, and featured stunning workmanship, a beautiful flow effect, quirky features, and rare intricacy.

The building also topped the Carters New Homes category ($1m-$2m).

Glenn Diffey Builders' renovation of an early 1900s house impressed by retaining its special character.

Judges said the builders' efforts to source materials to suit the original home created "an elegant piece of paradise".

And Stewart Hannah has more to grin about than the Home of the Year Award - the firm came away with a total of six awards.

Last night's ceremony saw 16 golds presented across 13 categories, including one for Jennian Homes Coromandel for the Builder's Own Home category, and a Matamata Gudsell Designer Homes entry for the Placemakers New Homes $350,000-$450,000.

Firms awarded a gold award are now eligible to enter the national competition, and finalists will be announced in August.
