Unsanitary issue results in toxic Fonterra whey
Infant formula and sports drinks made from Fonterra whey products could contain a toxic bacteria that can cause paralysis or even death, the company revealed overnight.
Shortly after midnight, Fonterra released a statement saying three batches of whey protein concentrate appear to contain Clostridium botulinum, which can cause botulism.
The illness has symptoms including nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, followed by paralysis, and can be fatal if not treated.
In a press conference held this morning director of New Zealand milk products, Gary Romano said three batches of whey products contain the bacteria and was caused due to an unsanitary issue with factory equipment at the Hautapu Fonterra plant.
On July 31, tests indicated the potential presence of a strain of Clostridium botulinum in a sample, similar tests revealed similar samples in March.
It is a very complex issue and we are working closely with eight of our customers and working to urgently investigate whether they have used any of the affected whey, and if they have, products will be recalled.
We are very concerned about public health and we assure the public we are doing everything we can.
The government has advised overseas regulatory authorities of the find.
Mr Romano said dairy products such as fresh milk, yoghurt, cheese, spreads and UHT milk products are not affected.
MPI's acting director-general Scott Gallacher says the agency is working to ensure there are no contaminated products on the New Zealand market.
