Taneatua house fire 'suspicious'

Whakatane Police and the Easern Bay Fire Safety Officer are investigating  a suspicious house fire near Taneatua last night.

Taneatua Fire Brigade was called to the property on Nuku Road just before midnight last night.

Deputy Fire Chief  Laurance Richardson  says when they arrived at the scene the house was well involved with flames.

"We received a call just before midnight that a neighbour could see what looked to be a house on fire." He says.

"Extra resources including a water tanker and appliances were called in from Edgecumbe and Whakatane."

No one was believed to be staying at the property at the time of the fire.

A full investigation into how the fire started is under way by local Police and the Eastern Bay of Plenty Fire Safety officer.
