Despite last years New Years Eve celebrations at Mt Maunganui being cancelled due to bad weather this years event is being dubbed a 'huge' success.

Last night a crowd of over 50,000 people turned out to take part in welcoming in 2013 on Mt Maunganui main beach last night and organizers are pleased to say it was the best so far.

Tauranga city council events manager Penny Mitropoulos said it was a great night for everyone and it was a 'huge success'.

Bay of Plenty police report a total of 47 people were arrested in the Mount and  Western Bay of Plenty through out the night.

Meanwhile in Rotorua hundreds turned out to celebrate the New Year with a concert featuring local acts and  New Zealand's very own  teen sensations boy band Titanium who headlined  the 'Party in the Park' apart of the  three day New Years Eve  Glo Festival witch ended with a 'huge' and 'spectacular' fireworks display organizers say.

A total of 27 were arrested in Rotorua between 5pm on Monday and 1.45am.

Taupo also celebrated with a bang with a large fire works display that lit up the shores of Lake Taupo.  Organizers say a strong crowd braved the chilly breeze and enjoyed a great night in Taupo with two fire works displays for the Family at 10pm and the 'big bang' at midnight.

Taupo Police report 13 people were arrested during the night.

Meanwhile Eastern Bay of Plenty report a quiet night with only 4 people being arrested.

Bay of Plenty Police are praising the behaviour of the majority of the public across the Bay of Plenty District.

Prevention Manager Inspector Scott Fraser said: "Yet again the Bay of Plenty has proved to be a fantastic place for families to see in the New Year. Most of the revellers were in great spirits and looking out for another. As always we were disappointed that there were small groups of people who let themselves down. Not only does it concern us that nearly all of the incidents we had to deal were alcohol-related, a significant number involved unsupervised youngsters.

"There were way too many teenagers who had access to alcohol and were intoxicated to the point where they placed themselves at risk."
