Babies bodies found in Matata backyard

Police hope a post mortem examination and liaison with medical experts will help them discover how premature twins found in Matata died.

Police are trying to find out how premature twin babies found in a Bay of Plenty backyard died.
The babies were found at an address in Matata, 65km east of Tauranga, on Friday afternoon.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Standen says police are hoping a post mortem examination and liaison with other medical experts will help them discover what caused the babies' death.

"That process may take some time and until it is complete we do not feel it would be appropriate to comment further or to speculate on the outcome," he said.

"It is a sensitive situation which is understandably distressing for the family involved and support has been put in place for the family."
