Wellington quake update

4.30pm update from Wellington Region Emergency Management Office

WELLINGTON CBD

-We strongly advise people not to come into the CBD today, if possible. The rest of Wellington City is largely operating normally. The other cities in the region appear to also be operating normally.

- Check with building owners and employers about work tomorrow if you work in the CBD - particularly if you work in streets with cordoned areas (see below).

- There are many glaziers working around the city repairing broken windows. Areas with hazards will be cordoned off.

- Cordoned areas will be policed and are there for your safety.

ROAD CLOSURES

- Featherston Street - there are 5 cordoned off areas. If possible avoid this area whether on foot or by car. The Highway electronic signage will advertise the Featherston St closures.

- Bolton Street closed around high rise buildings at The Terrace end.

- Johnston Street closed due to hazards as glaziers work to repair damage.

POLICE

- There will be extra Police around the city.

AIRPORT

- All roads around the airport are open and the airport is functioning as usual.

CIVIC CAMPUS (central library, art centre, gallery, town hall, Civic Centre)

- These will all be open tomorrow

CAR PARKS

- The high rise car park by Readings Cinema remains closed.

- The James Smith car park remains closed.

CHECK YOUR NEIGHBOURS

- There may be a lot of nervous people out there as it starts to get dark, particularly the elderly, those living alone, or young families. Take a minute to check they are OK - whether a phone call or visit. Knowing someone is around can be very reassuring.

We expect another report mid evening, otherwise we'll post information as it comes in.

We are not expecting another media briefing today.

Keep safe and check your torch before going to bed!
